Family of Alex de la Iglesia
Son of Ángel de la Iglesia, a sociology professor, and Matilde Mendoza, a painter.
Alex de la Iglesia Education
Degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Deusto.
From a very young age, he was attracted to the world of cinema and comics. In 1977, together with his brother Agustín and other friends, they began to draw comics. They created Burdijaun, a Basque superhero who appeared in the Northern Gazette. They also published a fanzine titled No, about comics and film criticism.
He made his debut as artistic director in several television programs and in the feature film Todo por la pasta, by Enrique Urbizu.
Alex de la Iglesia Films
Author of the short Mirindas asesinas (1990). His first feature was produced by ” El Deseo SA “, the company of the Almodóvar brothers, Acción mutante (1993). He later made The Day of the Beast (1995), which won six Goya awards, including the award for best director.
Later he directed Perdita Durango (1997), Dead of Laughter (1999), The Community (2000), 800 Bullets (2002), Ferpecto Crime (2004), The Oxford Crimes (2007) and Sad Trumpet Ballad(2010) which received two awards at the 67th Venice Film Festival, for best screenplay and the Silver Lion for directing.
In 2011 he premiered La chispa de la vida, starring the Mexican Salma Hayek and the Spanish comedian José Mota, and in 2013 the comedy Las brujas de Zugarramurdi.
In 2015, he premiered the comedy My Big Night, in which the singer Raphael participated. In 2017, he directed two films: the comedy El Bar, with the actors Mario Casas and Pepón Nieto and Perfectos desconocidos, with Eduardo Noriega, becoming a box office success, with a collection of approximately 20 million euros.
Television
He worked making sketches for television ( The worst program of the week, from El Gran Wyoming for Televisión Española and Inocente, Inocente, for regional television) and the series Plutón BRB Nero (2008) for television on La 2.
He directed 30 coins, a series of exorcisms located in a municipality in deep Spain that was released on HBO on November 29, 2020.
Writer
Author of a novel entitled Clowns in the washing machine (1997).
President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
In 2009 he was elected president of the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. On April 10, 2011, he resigned from office, and after an election the producer Enrique González Macho was elected.
Marriages and daughters
From 1997 to 2010, Alex de la Iglesia was married to Amaya Díez. In 2014, he married Carolina Bang, with whom he had three daughters; Rebecca, Claudia, and Julia.
